Robert A. M. Stern became known for his reinterpretations of traditional architecture, ranging from nineteenth-century shingle cottages to Art Moderne skyscrapers. This pitcher by Stern for Swid Powell explores classical shapes. The body of the vessel is a Doric column; the top of the capital swells out on one side to form the spout. The solidity of the vessel is countered by the scroll handle that lyrically arcs upward.
