\r\nJudging from the format, the lack of precious metals, and the scant use of embossing, this is likely an early surimono. The lines and colors, however, are skillfully rendered. A woman holds a child to her breast while turning toward a maid, who holds a long knife. The scene depicts a firstborn’s first shaving rite, a symbolic ceremony. The poems attest to the weight of the occasion. An attendant stands at lower right, a lacquered water jar in both hands, perhaps having just poured water into the tub below. A toy bird and a roly-poly doll are on the floor nearby, in case the baby becomes fussy.
