Legend holds that Bahadur met Rupmati while hunting and, enchanted by her singing, invited her to become his consort. The two were inseparable until 1560, when the Mughal emperor Akbar overtook Malwa and killed Bahadur. Upon Bahadur’s death, Rupmati poisoned herself in despair. In this painting, Bahadur, accompanied by Rupmati, is hunting antelope using a bow and arrow.
