Multiple factors—his brother’s death in combat in World War I, and the outbreak of the Russian Revolution—led him to leave the country in 1917. He traveled to Siberia, Japan, and the South Pacific before settling in New York in 1922. There, he continued to paint, inspired most notably by Vincent van Gogh and Magic Realism, and kept close ties to the Russian community. He painted <EM>South Sea Fishermen</EM> while living on the Bonin Archipelago in the South Pacific during the winter of 1920–21. Applying a Futurist vocabulary, with its depiction of movement in fractured planes, to the traditional motif of fishermen, the work testifies to his retreat from the West, not unlike that of Paul Gauguin.</span>","classified_as":[{"id":"http://vocab.getty.edu/aat/300435416","type":"Type","_label":"Description"}]},{"type":"LinguisticObject","content":"19 5/16 × 68 1/2 in.
