It consisted of thirty-six musical modes: six ragas, each having six consorts relating to the emotion, season, and time of day. Raga Malkauns is the second raga after Bhairava. Unlike the sixteenth-century mode of arrangement prescribed by the rhetorician Mesakarna and the so-called Hanuman System, first mentioned in the seventeenth century treatise Sangita Darpana (Mirror of Music), the Painter’s System is not derived from any musical or literary authority but rather developed over time through repetition. Today, it is still the most popular among South Asian artists.
","classified_as":[{"id":"http://vocab.getty.edu/aat/300435416","type":"Type","_label":"Description"}]},{"type":"LinguisticObject","content":"Approx.: 17 1/2 × 11 3/4 in.
