The view on this plate is based on a lithograph by an unknown American artist, produced around 1819. Ralph Stevenson and Williams extended the foreground of the original composition to fit the circular shape of the plate and rearranged the pedestrian figures. Located on Broadway and Fulton Street in New York, St. Paul’s was dedicated in 1766. It is the oldest public building in continual use in Manhattan and the city’s last remaining colonial church. It was at this building that Washington attended services after his inauguration in 1789. The house to the right of the church belonged to Major Rutherfurd of the English army, who moved there at the end of the Revolution in 1783. The transfer-printed border of acorns and oak leaves was one of the manufacturer’s stock designs, used primarily for New York and Boston views.
