In 1853 Central Park was officially established, and by 1858 the land between 5th Avenue and 8th Avenue extending from 59th Street to 110th Street was purchased. The intensely competitive commission for the park’s design was awarded in 1858 to the partnership of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.
