The source for the view on this platter is uncertain. However, an engraving by the New York artist Peter Maverick, which appeared in Theodore Dwight Jr.’s 1825 guidebook, The Northern Traveller, depicts sloping mountains very similar to those in the background of this scene. In the early nineteenth century, Lake George was famous for its beautiful scenery and exceptionally clear waters, in which, according to Dwight, \"a fish or a stone may be seen at the depth of 20 or 30 feet.\" The transfer-printed shell border was one of Enoch Wood and Sons’ stock designs and was their most frequently used border.
